Looking forward to visiting Silliman once again!

When I go back to Silliman next week with Tanghalang Pilipino's productions of GEE GEE AT WATERINA and WELCOME TO INTELSTAR, it will be my third time to visit the place.

I have been to Silliman University and Luce Auditorium twice before : the first was in 1978 when U.P. and PNB brought Tony Mabesa's production of Nick Joaquin's "Tatarin" back to back with Isagani Cruz' "Josephine"; the second was with Repertory Philippines' "The Gingerbread Lady" by Neil Simon in 1983.

I have very fond memories of both trips.

In 1978, Amiel Leonardia was still the Luce Auditorium's Technical Director. His assistant was a graduate student named Junix Inocian. I recall that Luce Auditorium was comparable with the best theaters in the country, probably next only to Philamlife Auditorium in terms of acoustics.

Among the company in that 1978 tour (which was also memorable because I lost my entire bag when we were dropped off by a C-130 cargo plane at the airport and we scampered out, my priority being the props and set pieces we had brought) were Betty Mae Piccio, who played Josephine and was also in "Tatarin", Cris Vertido (as Tatarin's Don Rafael and in the corps for "Josephine") , Chris Millado (who was a stage manager then), Dean Dayao, Ben Ramos, Amor Escalante, Henry Strzalkowski, Roy Marie Galang, Sonia Valenciano, and Edru Abraham, who was my roommate and would keep us all busy during the out-of-town bus rides with his impromptu music lectures.

Oh! I forgot to add that I was part of the company as an actor, playing parts in both "Josephine" and "Tatarin" alternating with Dean Dayao, but was also called to do Technical Direction at the last minute because the guy who was supposed to do it didn't make it to the Nichols runway.

In 1983, my roommate was Jaime del Mundo, who was in the cast of "Gingerbread Lady" together with Miguel Faustmann, Baby Barredo, Joy Virata, and Pinky Amador. Of course Bibot Amador and Dodo Lim were part of the company. It was Pinky's first ever plane ride, I recall. The trip was memorable for another thing: I stepped on a sea urchin in Basi and had to suffer the rest of the trip. (Yes, I gave my foot the urine treatment. )

For that trip, I was Lighting and Sound Designer and worked with the Luce technicians under Prof. Lu Decenteceo.

How time flies!

The rolicking one-act plays WELCOME TO INTELSTAR and GEE GEE AT WATERINA will be presented by Tanghalang Pilipino at the Silliman University's Luce Auditorium, Dumaguete City on Saturday, November 10, 2007, at 3:00 and 8:00 P.M.

WELCOME TO INTELSTAR introduces the audience to Ma'am Chelsea, a call-center trainor, as she welcomes her company's new recruits. Written and Directed by Palanca Award-Winner CHris Martinez, WELCOME TO INTELSTAR features stage luminary Mailes Kanapi as Ma'am Chelsea.

GEE GEE AT WATERINA is J. Dennis Teodosio's fictionalized retelling of an evening in the life of a once-upon-a-war comfort gay and his politician benefactor. Veteran Lou Veloso shares the stage with Paolo Cabanero, directed by Roobak Valle.

These performances of WELCOME TO INTELSTAR and GEE GEE AT WATERINA are under the auspicies of the Office of the President of Silliman University.
